Internal Family Systems

Summary

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a form of psychotherapy that can be used with adults, couples and families. The theory underlying IFS is that the essence of who you are is a core Self that is confident and compassionate. In addition to this core Self are sub-personalities that have developed over time in response to life events. These sub-personalities are painful emotions, wounded parts, and protective parts developed to shield one from pain. These sub-personalities tend to be in conflict with one another, and with the Self. The goal of IFS is to help heal, integrate, and transform these sub-personalities so that faith in the core Self is restored and all parts work together effectively and harmoniously.
